What BMP to JPG conversion does

BMP is an old, uncompressed Windows image format, so its files are very large. Converting BMP to JPG dramatically reduces the size while keeping the picture looking the same, making it far easier to email, upload or store.

How the conversion works

Each BMP is re-saved as a JPG with a high-quality setting, which shrinks the file substantially with no visible change to most images.

All processing takes place on our server, and no files are retained. Your files and the converted results are deleted automatically once the download is complete. Metadata embedded in the original, such as the location and time it was taken, is removed during conversion.

How to use it

  1. Drag your BMP files into the upload area, or click to select them. Multiple files can be added at once.
  2. Click Convert. A progress bar shows the upload, followed by processing.
  3. Download the converted JPG files.

Good to know

JPG is lossy, but at high quality the difference is not noticeable for ordinary photos, and the space saved over BMP is enormous. If you specifically need an exact, lossless copy, convert to PNG instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are BMP files so large?

BMP stores every pixel with no compression, so even a modest image can be many megabytes. JPG applies efficient compression, which is why converting typically cuts the file size by 90% or more with no visible difference for photos.

Will I lose quality converting BMP to JPG?

JPG is lossy, so there's a slight, one-time reduction — but at the high quality (85) we use it's not noticeable for photographs. The trade is a huge drop in file size for output that opens everywhere.

Should I use JPG or PNG for my BMP?

Use JPG for photos, where its compression is invisible and files stay small. Choose PNG instead if the BMP contains sharp text, screenshots, or line art you want to keep perfectly crisp, or if you need transparency.

Is any information lost besides file size?

BMP has no transparency, so nothing is lost there. The main change is the one-time JPG compression; the visible image stays effectively the same for typical photos and scans.

How many files can I convert, and is it private?

You can upload up to 30 BMP files per batch (20MB each, 200MB total), returned as JPGs in a single ZIP. Every uploaded and converted file is deleted automatically one hour after processing.
